Qatar World Cup 2022 – the land of hypocrisy

There is no previous World Cup and there will be no other in the future as debated like the World Cup from Qatar that is about to start on 20th of November 2022. The problem is that we all knew about this as early as December 2010, which means 12 years ago! Around six months before Qatar took over… PSG! What a coincidence? Not really. If you will read “The fall of the House of FIFA”, you’ll learn that this looks actually like one of the biggest barters not only from the sports history, but from the entire mankind. No debate on this, the point is that we knew for more than a decade that a football World Cup, technically the most viewed sports event in the world, will be held in a country that will need to build its entire infrastructure from scratch.

15.000 dead? Where? When?

When they won, everybody assumed they will meet the expectations and so they did. With what cost? This is the sensitive topic I wanted to discuss about. Numbers that hit 15.000 were debated when talking about foreign workers that died on construction sites related to the World Cup preparation in a decade, but actually the numbers appear to mislead, if we study in depth this interesting Deutsche Welle article. In reality, people did die and, most likely, the working conditions were poor. But this happens for every major construction in the world and the moment when Qatar was established as host for a World Cup, everybody accepted this. Now, I saw many that want to protest at qualified nation level because of these facts.

If you want to protest against the World Cup, just retire!

A good example is Denmark and their idea to have black kits. Wait? What? You are playing at a tournament that you think is supported on gallons of blood and you wear a… protest kit?! A real and truthful form of protest, if you indeed are so moved by this, is to literally not play at the World Cup. Qualified? So what?! I won’t participate, because thousands allegedly died! Has anybody done that? Of course not! Because they are all hypocrites! Now, some nations want to play with the support pride armband, while the officials of Qatar banned the use of alcohol two days before the kick-off. I mean… including beer, even though Budweiser is one of the main sponsors. OK, we know that in this part of the world alcohol is forbidden, but the Qatari initially suggested that it will be permitted, for this event, in some proportion. Actually, they made out their mind not to.

Final conclusion

Wow! What a surprise! Are you surprised? I am not! Anything that should be debated about the topics above is useless. The only conclusion is that all people linked to the tournament are highly filled with hypocrisy. And, in the end, this is a World Cup made because and for money. Otherwise, a small state as Qatar is could not organize such an event. Will it be a nice one? I doubt… Not because of the conditions because, from this perspective, the organization looks ideal: middle of competitional season, milder weather, air-conditioned stadiums. Everything in place. But the quality is not there anymore. Also, the vibe, caused by this “I-am-so-interested-about-human-rights!” will be bad. Not because it isn’t a good principle, but of course it is a fake one. Nobody involved actually care. Prove me wrong!
