FC Thun didn’t win anything in their entire history. Many don’t even know from which country these guys are coming from. Luckily, I remember their runner up run in 2005, so I remembered them for more than two decades. When they played in the UEFA Champions League group stage! They are from Switzerland. When we are talking about this country, in terms of football, we are talking, depending on the period, about Basel, Grasshoppers Zurich, Young Boys Bern, or even FC Zurich, Saint Gallen can come into the equation as well, but very unlikely to run into FC Thun when we are speaking about performance. Actually, on 2nd of May 2026, Basel even beat these guys 3-1, so the headline is even a bigger surprise.
FC Thun, replicating Ipswich, Kaiserslautern and Leicester
But FC Thun took advantage of other results, and, of course, their large lead extended thru the whole season and became Swiss champions. If you don’t follow football on a recurring basis, you should understand this is not a big, but a huge deal. Not only that FC Thun didn’t won a single trophy before – yep, not even the Swiss Cup! – but they were freshly promoted, making them a modern Kaiserslautern, Nottingham Forest, or Ipswich Town, if we want to go down in history and to align with present day. Actually we can include here Leicester City as well. Even their promotion and their Premier League title were two years apart in 2016, it is a story too good not to be remembered.
Mattias Käit traded Rapid Bucharest for the Swiss champions
FC Thun, then, won the league. By a huge advantage: 11 points clear, as we speak, on top of Saint Gallen. The funny part about these guys is that one of the few foreigners in the squad is a lad I remember very well: Mattias Käit. The Estonian played for Rapid Bucharest for three years and a half, was, at some point, one of the best in the team, but his formed dropped, so in the end a transfer proved to be the best solution. Apparently, for him it was. He became Swiss champion, regardless if he didn’t play always a regular starter, while Rapid is about to finish another season in 5th. FC Thun lost four out of its last five games, but still claimed the tile, and write a very inspiring page in the football history. Even if it has not a lot of ink on it. 🙂
